You guys should really dock my pay. If you want the scores they are updated on the Google Calendar (see website for link), but I can't put the standings up until I get home, I promise to do that after dinner...should've been done Saturday afternoon, but one too many glasses of draught, I'm afraid.

As for the Skills Competition winners, I didn't write them down, so I'm not 100% sure, but I think it went like this...
Punt - Wes King
QB - Jay W Martin
FG - not Chambers? somebody hit a 50 yarder to win, but I'm not sure who it was
Fastest Man - I think Big Pete won this at the wire, but he didn't show up at Mel's to defend against JJ, so it went to him.

Actually...not many showed up at Mel's, this might be an interesting topic to discuss on the boards...the turnout back at the sponsor used to be good every week, this week the turnout for the party was like a bad week from the past. Any thoughts on this phenomenon?

Finally, on to the week ahead...Burgundy vs. Silver 9:30. The mouth that roared against...well, that could be either of them...who will be undefeated after this week?

5 Wes????? Gotta confess, its a higher rating than i thought you'd give me! You get lucky out of the hat and start talking though..... Very poor form! Maybe we'll get a playoff date. Schlieffer's mighty Lions have lost, time for grey to hit reality too.

Sorry to Orange for missing the last few weeks, I know we've been battling hard, I'll be there for the rest of the games!

Glad to have you back Mike!!

After Saturday's loss to Silver, count me on the side of the believers. Don't know why the big names on the board don't give the Schleiffer's more respect. They played fantastic against us and deserve more accolades!

I hope your young kids leg is OK, however, 'cause he is also a big factor with your team. With him I think you have the best chance to win the whole thing. Without him, I am not so sure... Too bad we play on the other field at 9:30 this week. Silver vs Burgundy will be a great game to watch.

BTW Duncan, the young kid from Silver passed me on the Fastest Man race. In fact even with my 10 yard lead, he passed me 20 yards into the race... Man that kid is fast! (just ask Lance!!)

re: Duncan's observations on the decline of attendance at our sponsor

When I came over to this league from Oshawa many moons ago, the first thing that struck me was the comradery among the players from opposing teams. In Oshawa, after games teams retreated to their area of a parking lot for beers and socialized minimally with other teams. This made many games chippy as players from team to team largely were unknown to each other and often viewed only as an opponent to be beat. In Whitby, you were most often lined up against someone you had enjoyed competing with in a previous year or would possibly in the coming year. I beleive this made the WMFL a true gentleman's league. What added to the generally positive atmosphere on the field was the fact that every team got together after the games to celebrate at our sponsor (initially Brother's and now Melanies). This doesn't happen any more. Why? While I do beleive that the mentality of the league has changed somewhat and teams that used to be made up on a random basis, contributing to the 'gentleman's' nature of the league, are starting to look more and more similar through the blocking and drafting process, there is a more obvious reason. The games are to spread apart. Players from an 8:00 game are not willing or able to stick around another 4 hours to wait for games to be completed. We need to look into the possibility of getting Anderson or some other field again. If it was a Principal that nixed the permit, he is probably moved by now. With games ending much closer together,we should get the social part of this league back and with it the many perks that came with having a sponsor (anybody remember the Budwieser trailer in the parking lot and being served by the Bud Calander Girls!!!) Oh how I miss the good old days!

I don't generally like to make posts on here about the Oshawa League but as it was mentioned in the previous post (In a somewhat negative context) I just wanted to point out that the Oshawa League is no longer the way it was "many moons ago". Currently we have 3 seperate divisions (hoping for 4 next season) which allows the competitive teams to play against other competitive teams while the recreational teams can play against players/teams at their same level. While I do not feel the poster of the above message had any malicious intents whatsover regarding the Oshawa League in his post I did feel it was my responsibility to address said post. As to the point on camaraderie of the two leagues I do agree that there is more in the wmfl but that in my opinion the difference is not nearly as great as some think. I know that from my personal experience there is a great deal of camaraderie with players on all teams and I have seen it with numerous other players as well. Obviously the nature of the OTFL (no draft) doesn't lend itself to as much familiarity between players but from what I have seen the level of sportmanship in the OTFL is as good as any league I have played in.

Hopefully both leagues can continue to provide football to all members of the Durham Region for a long time to come.

On another note really looking forward to our matchup against Silver this Saturday. It's going to be a great one (possibly a finals preview) :).

Hey Scott, you're right, nothing malicious intended. I thoroughly enjoyed the years I played in the Oshawa League. Wasn't trying to say one was better, just that they were different. It sounds like over the last 15 years they have both moved towards each other in their concept. I would like to see return of the days of a larger number of players coming together after games and for social events like the mid-season

I know for me personally (as I am definitely one of the culprits that used to go back to the bar but now doesn't) it is simply life situation. With two young kids and numerous sports it is difficult to find the time to get back. From running other leagues I totally understand the importance of both having and supporting a sponsor and also know how frustrating it can be when you have a sponsor and are not getting the support. So that being said I hypocritically urge everybody to go back to the bar and support the wmfl sponsor.

Also not to continually harp on this point but if the games were kept on schedule that might also help encourage people to go back. I know for myself there are times where I would consider going back for a quick drink (usually when I play in the late game) but then by the time my game has finished it is already 30 - 45 minutes after when I was expecting it to finish and decide against it.

Attendance at Melanie Pringles, I agree is influenced by two things:

- Games start & run too late into the day. Two start times was ideal. Move games to another field if we need to, or have less teams

- The age of folks and their personal situations always change.. Maybe in the old days there was more single guys, more guys on their way to divorce cause they were gone every Saturday, less guys with kids...
whatever, this is harder to pin down

I am not a large attendee at Mel Pringles, but I was good for twice a year, Mid Season & End of Season. This week with the skills competition (although a laugh), and the three start times, our game ended at 13:40. That's a whole Saturday gone

For me, it s mostly the first reason.

I don't go because I just don't like any of you guys.

Seriously, I can only speak for my personal situation, and it's the same as Scott's. I can give up a Saturday morning, but to turn that into 2 or 3 o clock, it gets tough with 2 small children at home.

It seems like Melanie's has evolved into tailgating on the hill, which is easier to do. Unfortunately I see the downside and that is we aren't supporting our sponsor. I don't think there is a solution to this, but it may lie in a combination of fixing the schedule a bit, and having the younger, unmarried, non parents and the older kids out of the house type folks be encouraged to go a bit more. Also, Duncan does a great job in promoting Melanie's, but maybe teams (especially the ones that play late) should try to organize their whole team going once or twice during the season.

Punt - Wes King (RED)
QB - Jay W Martin (Silver)
FG - Mike Schleiffer (Silver)
Fastest Man - David Zmozynski (Silver)

Also note That Wes from (Silver) came a close second in Punt

Hey guys. Reading some of the posts about melanies. I agree guys have time restraints and family and stuff like that.. I'm a culprite too, i used to go evry saturday and don't anymore. I agree its the start times and looking into another field will benefit the league and Melanies at the same time. As a member of the executive i will put forth a motion into looking for another feild. OR (its just a thought) maybe a fresh start with a new sponser? Trhow it around a bit and i will check in on the board later and see what is said ok guys.. Have a good one!! Burgundy #1!!!

I must say that I enjoy the tailgating and Steve does a great job with the weekly BBQ's.
However, it does put the league, the executive and our permits in peril. All it will take is one complaint and we could lose both of our fields. I understand that people have families and other things to do but planning to attend once in a while would encourage our loyal sponsor and garner some additional live trash talk. I have always bought many a worthy opponent a beverage or two after some apparent bump or hold on the field.
Cheers

Thanks for the support Big Pete.

My FG was probably a 42 yarder... none of us could hit after 2 tries from 45, so we had to move it up a bit.

Is there any way we can change the time of the skills competition to after the late games for next year?
It got started super late and the last games finished very late, I'm sure unfortunately this may have been a reason some people didn't attend Mel's. I personally left for Detroit to see the Lions play but if I hadn't, I don't think I would have been able to make it.
For the refs of the late games it would have been a very long morning with their own game starting at 9:30 and not getting of the field until 1:30. I thanked them for sticking it out.
Another option might be having two 8:00 games, so most guys are finished by 11:00 and can make it over for a beer, instead of finishing at 12:30.
I just want to add that I finished second in the fastest man by at least 12 yards, I was trying to get a glimpse into how to play d against him for next year, my only conclusion is his to give him at least 15 yards, cause he'll blow by ya. Actually maybe I'll block with him.

You only get one shot on the feild though gentlemen! Brings me back to the kick heard round the world when Duncan toe-poked a 25 yard FG with no time on the clock to win the 2009 WMFL championship!

I believe that was the last FG he ever attempted...

I think that field goal was farther than 25 yards. I know that to Duncan it looked like about 50, but it was definitely a memorable kick nonetheless.

Also, looking at the schedule, it looks like Baby is going to have to win at least 2 out of 3 to make the top 8 ... maybe I'll send Mike H and his new wife on a day trip on November 5th as a wedding present? Or, who knows, it's an 8:00 game, maybe Hadden Jr. will have been drinking?!?

thruthfully...probably about 35...and i kicked it like a real soccer player, mike! the only reason i felt like i could make it was that noah scored almost every time he touched the ball that year so i got a lot of practice kicking off, but we never tried a fg (or even a one-point convert) during the regular season, not sure exactly why we did then...if i missed the thought was that tagging them for a single to send it into OT was a foregone conclusion. i know the refs were cheering for one down the middle or scuffed along the ground, without benefit of replay you don't want to have to make the call on whether that one over the upright was in or out...

I was a ref in that game and I was praying for a big miss or one right down the middle and that's where it ended. I assure you however, you did not kick it like a soccer player.

TJ, what did you have in mind? Regardless I hope I am out the night before...

ok mike, maybe i didn't kick it exactly like a 'real soccer player', but it wasn't a tom dempsey special either (well, as historic, but not a toe-kick!). gotta say though, not being described as a 'real soccer playeer' doesn't really hurt my feelings all that much ... although i was carried off the field like one!

No doubt David on Silver is pretty unique and hopefully will have many, many special years to come. What are some of the big players that had big games in the past few years? I remember Mike Hadden taking over a game a few years ago. What about TJ almost single handedly beating Noah's team in the finals. With all the star power that team had, they just could not stop TJ. Unfortunately Duncan's foot put a damper on what would have been a legendary game for TJ. Darren Cholod simply killed Spack's team in the playoffs a few years ago. Same thing. Everyone knew who was getting the ball, noone could stop it.

We are not over rated? We have the best team! Your own QB yes Spack himself said "you guys won already you have the best team" can't tell me we are over rated when your own QB would rather play for Silver than Burgundy! LOL!! I played for Burgundy in week one and Scored 3 TDs and won you guys the game! Three silver players including myself played for Gold and won them a game! Look at the mid season events! Everyone knows we are the best team! We are all having a good time playing. Every player has a least 2 TDs. The Schleiffer's are not over rated they are the best players I have played with so far and they share the field. So burgundy will TANK this weekend and are lucky to have won most of their own games. Without Silver burgundy would be second! Raf you still haven’t told me who are you going to cover! Maybe the Schleiffer's will just play D so we will only beat you by 20! That way you will still have some hope after the game.

That's right bitches, GOD in the house and ready to go again after a five and oh first showing.
Lets get down to business.
Baby/Green - Even after a most impressive win, i still don't see enough there to think baby will beat green. Green wins in what will be a closer game than many expect. Look for Wray to tear it up, and TO to pick Miller twice.
Silver/Burgandy - This is a hotly debated game up here in the happy hunting ground. My boy JC is loving Wes and his Silver team (and the trash talk); so much so he has a bet going with Allah who is a HUGE spack-backer. Winner takes 15 virgins. I can't go against JC on this one, and am going with Silver to take this. Wes, teach that bald kid to catch!
Red/Orange - This will be a very good game. Red is solid, and King is coming into his own in this league. Orange is hungry for blood after the last couple of weeks. Red squeeks this one out, even with the best player in the league back from his nuptuals.
Black/Teal - Toilet bowl preview. 'nuff said.
Gold/Navy - give me Navy on the strength of its leader; a man named after the guy who brought my creatures to safety after i scourged the earth of wretchedness. Not saying gold is wretched, but Navy will win.
That is all my children.

5 for 5 last week TJ showed and played so I win
This week almost every game will be very close.

8:00 3 - Green (Miller) 2 - Baby (T.0.)

Green on a winning streak. TJ showing up and QBn getting their first W even though it was against Black still a good Win.
I think Baby is a good team but not quite as good as Green.
This game will be closer than people might expect

Green by only ONE PLAY

9:30 9 - Orange (Colin) 5 - Red (King)

Another game that will be close. Look for the return of M. Hadden for Orange should bring Collin a win. But they still lack numbers showing up. Red on the other hand have been getting a full squad.

Red no Orange no Red by ONE Tenth of a PLAY

9:30 6 - Silver (Wes) 10 - Burgundy

Well the regular season game of the year! Who will show? Looks like Tank is out and what about rookie Dave new fastest man in Whitby looks like he is out with injury! Just leaves Wes(if he shows) vs Spack = Burgundy, Raf vs. J. Schleiffer = tie, M.Schleiffer vs. Scott = Silver, D. Fletcher vs Clay = Silver, Snyder vs. Jomo = Silver JW vs Steve O = Silver G.Clarkin vs Stevins = Silver S.Clarkin vs K. Roskar = Silver and Ryan vs no one else = Silver Schultzy take notes.
Total Burgundy = 3 Silver = 7 . Tie goes to Burgundy and extra pt for better QB but still Silver Wins. If no Wes then I will pick Burgundy.

Silver by ONE PLAY

11:00 4 - Navy (Noah) 8 - Gold (Nick)
This is another game that could be close but I see Navy taking this one. Noah to pick off Nick!

Navy by more than ONE PLAY

11:00 1 - Teal (Chambers) 7 - Black (Drew)
Teal had a close game against a strong Red team! Black getting killed by a TJ/TO baby team!

Teal by more than ONE PLAY

To those who doubt the supremacy of team silver, you need to examine your own motivation for doing so . . . Jealousy? Revenge? Fear? Definitely not rational thought or an accurate comparison of the teams.

So, I seem to have ruffled some feathers on the Silver team with my comparisons. Guys, you are proving the point that most of us have known for some time. When you sit down and compare teams 1 on 1, you don’t get the whole story. I stick by my statement that Jay Schleiffer by himself is not going to win Silver games. It is the whole team that is winning them games. One week it might be Wes throwing great passes to Jay and Mike. The next week it is the Clarkins and Snyder making plays on both O and D to win. A couple of times this year, without Wes there, it has been the young Silver hat picks that have made the plays to win the games. It is the sum of the parts that makes this team the best so far this year. BTW, I have picked you guys to win every game since week 3. I am on the bandwagon of the TEAM.

Also remember that the season is far from over. We have had teams get off to great starts only to fade down the stretch or in the playoffs. There are a number of experienced teams in this league that will play differently come the playoffs. Silver has got to be the favorite right now, but we have former Champs like Spack, Colin, Noah and experiences QBs like John and Nick that will certainly bring their “A” game down the stretch. If Silver falters at all, there are teams that will take advantage of it…

3-2 last week, making me 21-8-1 on the season. T.J. showed and played, I didn’t expect that and Navy was without their #1 pick again in their loss to Green.

Hey ONE PLAY, you got a good shtick, why steal mine??

Henry North - 8:00 – Baby vs Green

Bradimore < Miller, Pierre = Wray, Brooks = Payne, Siekowski > Carquez, Sabadin < Hanley, Hubenig < Cain, Schulz/Greatrix/Benight/Massey < Warburton/Neznik/Wodd/Highney

So, I am going with the expectation that T.J. plays QB again this week and Pierre plays receiver. This makes the Baby team a much more potent offense, one that showed they can score big last week. However, Green is a much better team that the Black team Baby faced last week. I am tempted to pick the early morning upset, but I think I will stick with the hot team…

Take GREEN

Henry South - 9:30 – Burgundy vs Silver

Spackman > Coke, Katradis < J.Schleiff, Rafuse > M.Schleiff, Elkington = Fletcher, Thompson < Snyder, Rigg = Martin, Oleksik/Jeune/Roskar < Clarkins/Lungrin/Meyer/Zmozynski

The latest chapter in the “Game of the Year” is here folks. The two unbeatens meet on the field. I haven’t heard from my insiders whether or not the young speedster Zmozynski is OK after he left the Orange game early last week. He is a difference-maker that will be missed by Silver if he isn’t there. Frank is going to be missing for Burgundy, which limits them as well, and hurts them more, as they have a limited bench. Silver is talking a lot of smack, while the Burgundy team is keeping quiet. With full teams I might make a different pick, but I stick by what I said a couple of weeks ago. I will keep picking them until they are proven wrong…

Take SILVER

Henry North - 9:30 – Red vs Orange

A.King < C.Hadden, Dehaney < M.Hadden, W.King = B.Smart, Klassen > Hendry, Verville < R.Hadden, Young < Big Pete, Crouter/Heighways/Scanga/Higney < Hazlett/Harding/Julien/King

OK Orange, all the excuses are gone now. You have your top pick back. I know missing Mike has hurt, but you have looked like a terrible team the last few weeks, much worse than expected. This is the week you better start to bounce back. Red has been playing well and won’t be a pushover. Should be an excellent game even with no-one watching…

Take ORANGE

Henry South - 11:00 – Black vs Teal

Walker = Chambers, Carswell < Blanche, Eskins > Alexander, McDonald < Hackett, Best < Marshall, Dionne = Morris, Carter/Chappelle/Clarks > Newberry/McKeon/Livingston/Blandford/Curci

Black laid another egg last week. Then again, Teal did too. They have been very disappointing this season. I expected more from this group. Last realistic chance for Black to get a win this year, I think, as they finish off with games against Navy and Silver. I don’t see it happening…

Take TEAL

Henry North - 11:00 – Gold vs Navy

Nick < Noah, Heath < DaSilva, Glover = Matthews, S.Bird > Quane, P.Bird < Imai, El-Hajjeh < McCaskie, Sederis/Phllips/Hickson = Benson/Fowler/Dunnett/Charmley

Navy, same story as Orange. Time to start winning is now. You want to get on a roll for the end of the season into the playoffs. If they get their full team out, they are better than this Gold team. There was a Lance sighting last week for Gold, but I am not sure whether it helped or not… Won’t this week.

Take NAVY

Thanks to all those that were running BBQ’s and controlling the mid-season activities last weekend. It wasn’t the best weather, but there was a great crowd toughing it out, so my spies tell me.

Have fun and remember to leave it all out on the field boys!!

C'mon, how good could Silver be?

1 Win Baby - missing players, as was Silver - and having it's number one pick hobble around with an ankle injury looking like he's riding a broken bicycle, yes this same 1 win Baby team lost to Silver by an e-mail.

Yup, we forgot to ref the earlier game and were docked 8 points, and we went on to lose the game by 2 (we couldn't convert that TD with no time to go). So Silver, while picking up a win in the standings, was beaten on the field.

And we all know that Silver's hat pick is a better QB than Wes, we played a better version of Silver and beat them straight up.

And since Schlieffer would only be about the 7th best player on Baby, he wouldn't have made a difference at all.

Burgundy should win by 20 or 30 ... depends on how late in the game backup QB Raf gets tired of scoring points and when Tuna gets his shots in.

Also, my injury report:

"There is no acute fracture or dislocation.
Thickening and abnormal fluid along the medial tendons raises the possibility of tendinopathy/tendinitis. An element of tearing cannot be excluded.
Deltoid ligament partial tear is also suspected."

Man, I'm a wreck. Can I go back to being in my 20's again when I healed like Wolverine?

Fake TJ get off this board!! Good readership, the TJ who wrote those LIES above cannot be the real TJ. The real TJ would never say such crazy things.
Fake TJ is correct in his summation of the Silver/Baby game however, and that Baby would have won had they reffed. That said, he contextualizes the details in a way to promote his malicious lies about team silver. Clearly fake TJ has an agenda to turn the good readership against the fine and pure and humble Team Silver. He forgets to mention just how depleted we were - no QB, no first round, no second round, no third round, no fifth round. In fact, i was the top drafted Silver player there.
I call on Duncan and the WMFL executive to banish fake TJ forever from this board. The real, and sensible, TJ is always welcome.

Well played Burgandy, congrats on your win - it'll go differently if we meet in the playoffs, I assure you. RAf jr is a heck of a player, we had no answer for him and Steve-o, good game dude! Silver team - that was the worst I've played in a long time, I'll be back on my game next week. Sorry boys.

Raf jr is on the team because Jomo Rigg decided not to play this year. THey needed another player. Raf Jr. was a good pickup.

Hey Wes , how did your team do this week? I haven't seen any score updates but I see a lot of complaining about a player on burgundy. Only losers complain so I assume Silver TANKED this game?

Wes is simply questioning the process of how a ringer slipped onto Burgundy. Answer: the decision was Raf's. Next question?

Oh lord give me strength!!!!! Here's another idiot trying to step up to the plate! Didn't ur mother ever tell u if u have nothing nice to say don't say it at all?????

Tank is what u call urself?

tank
[tangk]
- noun
1. large receptacle for liquid or gas
2. armored combat vehicle
- Related Form    tank·like- adjective

We shall go with meaning number 1. That should explain ur man boobies and the constant smell of S+@! On the field when u play!

Yes I'm complaining cuz its b.s for a contender to pick up a 10! If I may recall rafs bro already played against teal jomo played after then they picked him up again???? What's the excuse for that? To me it the situation should of been brought up b4 the qbs! But hey its all good if a lose a player ill bring a surprise!

Just saying stunts like this is reason y people leave and go to ajax

P.s tank? Invest in a good sports bra u look ridiculous trying to catch a ball with ur titties hitting ur face!

you have raf and spack on the same team, what did you expect?

Posted By Posted By: How did this happen?

As recently as last year the Exec had a fair process to bring new players into the league - post draft. In effect there had to be either 3 or more teams (needing players) randomly drawing for 3 or more new players seeking a team. At a minimum if only 1 new player was available there had to be at least 3 teams involved in the draw, to keep it random. If 3 or more players were available and only 1 team needed a player, then that team had to randomly draw a single name from that pool of 3+ players. From the evidence presented it appears that due process is no longer being followed.
How did this happen?
Has the WMFL reverted to a system whereby top players simply avoid the draft, so they can slip onto the team of their choice via back door after the season is under way?
Who on the Exec is making (or looking the other way) on these decisions?
The whole point of the draft was to treat all players and all teams with equal fairness. The proper thing to do in this case would be to put Raf jr's name into a hat and give all teams an equal chance to randomly draw his name.

Even if Spack had lost Jomo and was down a player, the exec should take a look at his team, and realize he was 4-0, and possible move a mid tier player from say Black who was 0-4, and move Raf Jr. to Black. Thats how it should work. The exec cannot control the draft, and 10s hiding in blocks, and other shenanigans are going to happen but Raf Jr should never have been placed on a dominate Spack team watching him the last few weeks light up other teams is an insult to the process.

the exec needs to look at this.

Burgundy played well yesterday, we couldn't stop their offence and they played well on defence. There is no doubt in my mind that they were the better three players, who didnt leave the field. Silver was the better "team" as every player played as equal as possible.
As for Raf Jr. playing, he is a good player and I don't care if he somehow sneaked on Burgundy, it was good playing against him as I enjoy playing against top level players. Burgundy won the game and they deserve the win. They obviously need a win in their life more then the Silver players do, so enjoy it boys.
See ya in the playoffs

why was the extra player pick delayed untill the forth game. maybe someone thought certain teams would lose the first four if they were short players, obviously the silver teams weakness is their quarterback, i didn;t see them lighting up the field with their great receivers, there are several teams in contention for the title, instead of crying wolf , make changes within your team to make it better, then the best team will win, coach

Coach ? Is that the first game you've seen team silver play? Nothing is wrong with the qb on silver, or please tell me what's wrong so we can improve to be a contender!

Also still waiting to hear something from the executives on picking up players

Jomo has not played a single snap for us all year and I'm pretty sure Matt was assigned to our team by the executive during a mass player assignment around week 4. As for our game against Silver we were missing our first round draft pick.
