Well the 2013 season is upon us. Who's back? Who's not? Any pre-season predictions. Let the talk begin...

I see the draft is being held in a new location this year... New sponsor? Lost old sponsor? Mel's was very good to the league. Did they have enough of people not showing up after games?

As the draft is a week away, who are the QB's this year? Also, are there some regular names absent from the registrant list this year?

Spack, Rafuse, Colin, Noah, Miller, Chambers, Nick and TO (yes TO, the exec must have been drunk at that point)

With my secret connections, I was able to see a copy of the draft list. There are some players new to the league as usual. Will anyone be able to spot Spack's secret ringer this year (you know, the one guy with a 6 or 7 ranking who is really an 11) before Spack drafts him?

It looks like the Patriots are poised for another good year, with the Hadden brothers making up a good part of the roster. After QB Colin Hadden, we have:

Mike Hadden,
TJ Hadden,
Dan Hadden, and
Rich Hadden.

In preparation for the upcoming season, I pretended today was a Saturday and cracked open a beer before noon. Sure, I'm at work, but the boss said it was okay.

Can't wait to see everybody on the field again!

When the rules are made by the Haddens for the Haddens, the Haddens tend to have a good year.

Shouldn't Rich have been blocked with Mike like ALL the other blocks and taken up your 1 & 2 picks? Oh that's right, then you wouldn't be able to get another top player at 2.

I feel sorry for the rest of the guys on your team. The only time they will get to see the ball is in the huddle.

And yes I'm awhere that only cowards post anonymously, hence the name Coward. So we can just skip that diversionary part already and maybe you can just point out how I'm wrong. This should be interesting.

Coward, your right we're cheaters. All the free time I put into the league for meetings, bringing the pads for early games and grabbing them after the late games, organizing jerseys and or year end prizes etc. is so we can cheat... It well worth my time.

Room for cowards on the exec. Though so put your name forward, volunteer your time and have your say.

I am curious about the draft. What are the teams?!?!

And so it begins. Before I get to cowards comments I will first mention that while Mel's has been a great sponsor in the past, by shifting the draft to Thursday there was issues last year with the live entertainment and to be quite honest, we haven't gotten anything from Mel's in the past few years. With the free BBQ at the field every week this is to be expected but I think it has done alot for the camaraderie in the league. The change was really just that, a change, nothing more, nothing less.

I am hoping to have the team lists to Duncan this weekend so he can post with schedule by Monday.

Now onto the parity comments. This is really my first year helping on the exec and like Hadden Jr. have spent numerous hours over the past month and a half to try and ensure things go smoothly and everyone has a great time as I have had in this league over the past 8 years. I realize that the way things are done are not going to make everyone happy but keep in mind, the rules were not modified for Colin, Mike and Rich. There are many factors and precedents made to allow families to play together in the past all while doing our best to maintain parity. If the comment was meant to stir up controversy then so be it, I have thick skin. If you truly think you have a better way of doing things then please join the exec as Mike suggested and have a voice. If you wanted to discuss further, you know where to find me.

Just trying to cause some trouble here. Mike you never actually answered Coward's question about the block/non-block with Rich. You just praised your own efforts as if that meant you're above having to answer such a question.

I was by no means trying to praise my efforts, I was simply stating the time that it takes is not for self gain I can assure you. Reffering to the insinuation "Hadden's make the rules" by being on the exec. To be honest its insulting which you realize and is why I imagine you choose not to put your names up.

If you want to discuss this or any other issue though, we can have the conversation any Saturday with any of the exec. I'm sure they would all be more than happy to.

Posted On Posted On: Aug 31st, 2013

And if I can also add to that, as I mentioned there have been precedents to allow family blocks and it is strange how no one said anything when last year we let Adam block with his brother and dad in the 2nd and 8th spots. Were those rules made for the Kings as well? Quite frankly if Mike and Rich were to block as brothers and be up for drafting back to back would they go as high as they did or like TJ and his brother slip to the second round. At any rate, as Mike said, we are more than happy to have a discussion and hear your suggestions on Saturday over a beer. And again, if these posts are just to stir up controversy so people have extra motivation when they play against the Haddens, that's fine but I don't think it is required as the defending champ will always be a target.

I'd just like to point out that I'm more likely to give our team (Patriots) a handicap as I've never played football in my life and have little to no understanding of the game, it's rules, positions or general flow.

If anyone has any concern that TJ has brought in a sand bagger, all I can say is this; if my game (by some miracle) gives our team a competitive edge, the embarrassment should rightfully fall on any team who's loss to us was a result of anything I accomplished on the field. ;)))))))))))))

P.s. are there "slam dunks" in football? And if so, how do I get them?

Can't wait for all the Haddens to play. As for the draft everybody had a chance at the Bradimores. If Noah and Spack were smart they would of left the first pick for Colin to take but they aren't. Also if Phil was smart he would of taken Tj but he's not. So is the Haddens really the ones to blame?

Based on 2012 team lists, here are my predictions:
Patriots: 7-2 Lead the league in scoring
Cowboys: 6-3 Lead the league in defense
Packers: 6-3
49'rs: 6-3

Patriots over Packer 38-14 in final

A good time had on the hill

I am 100% confident in these preditions

Raf Raf Raf,

I thought that was the plan last year, when Ryan and Z were fixed at number 1, to let the number 2 pick open for Colin, so when I picked, I did and picked #4. Then someone swooped in and grabbed the #2 pick, remember? Granted it wasn't going to be you again this year, as you have your bro, but I wasn't going to be fooled again.

I personally like the challenge of declining talent Mike and washed up TJ on the same team. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

The website has been updated with the teamlists (posted above also, I see) and the schedule. It's been a long, long weekend for me, just back home now, although I checked the schedule briefly I am a bit cross-eyed at this time, so if anyone notices any mistakes please let me know and I'll correct them (mistakes are like a team playing twice in the same day or not at all or reffing when you're supposed to be playing...number of reffing assignments and number of early/late games should also be roughly balanced for each team).

seeya saturday!

So this is the same talk I had with Nick about the draft, and although it is too late, it will be accounted for next year as I plan to join the Exec. and have a say in the matter. Hadden's will be blocked 1-2 if TJ and TJ jr. are blocked 1-2. Couldn't be more disappointed with the way that worked out.

We'll be seeing you guys in Week 1 and I hope you have the depth we have or defense might be a struggle.

Can't wait for Saturday to come any sooner!

I also expect to have ZERO! catches while Giorgio lights up the field. Hadden and TJ can't cover 3 people can they?

Dear Tank,

I've been covering three receivers in Whitby ball since you were knee high to a grasshopper. But I'm getting older now and struggling through injuries, so Mike and I will take two each, so hopefully Nick has good chemistry with your center, who will be quadruple covered.

In all seriousness, your team looks pretty solid. Don't take the severe beating you're going to receive Saturday morning as an indictment of your team's talent ... it's just what the Patriots do to teams.

As for the 9 am, 11 am starts, I was thinking the same thing, Carter. 10:30 am starts for the second game (even if it means they occasionally start a little bit late) seems like it'd be better for a lot of guys in the league who (like me) have kids. Reffing a 9 am game and then playing at 11 means an awfully long Saturday (8:30 am to 1 pm). Not so bad when I was 18, but life has changed some since then!

Also, my sister is getting married on Saturday, so the earlier we can start, the better!

I am only speaking to myself but I'm sure the other exec members would be open to a 10:45 am start to get it moving, 10:45am is also realistic to actually start on time. I have no issue with it.

We went with 9 & 11am because that was the schedule when we had Henry and Anderson.

Carter, we did not discuss any changes in game times so 2 x 40min halves it is.

Schultzy 2013 Draft Recap

An 8-team league this year has added a whole new angle to the action. On draft night, there were a few surprises, but when one thinks that the number of teams has been reduced by two, it is obvious that combinations such as Mike and T.J. would end up together.

So Chris P is back to QB and we say good-bye to Adam King, T.J. and Ryan Meyer from the "arm" club. Glad to see all are remaining in the league however, hopefully for a long time, as we continue to try and build the league.

A new location for the draft this year. I am sure that no-one could see me as they wouldn't know
where to look... (or who they are looking for)

Here is my opinion of what I saw in the draft.

1> Steelers
- Solid overall roster with the speed of Tim and Ben
- Experienced back-end of the roster with Klassen, Jomo and Glenn
- I have seen all of the above-mentioned players drop many a sure-thing over the years. This is not the all-hands team!

2> Cowboys
- I think it has been a few years since I have been impressed with a Spack-chosen team. The first 6 picks are outstanding.
- I know that Dave and Dave have been playing together in another league, so this could be the most lethal combination in the WMFL in years...
- Experienced late picks including McCaskie and Warbird
- Call me crazy, but I am not sure I see any, other than perhaps there being a lot of youth, but Spack and those aforementioned vets will help with that.

3> Packers
- Lots of speed in the first picks, followed by some solid "hands" folks later.
- Defense will be this teams strength with a number of pick-6 possible players
- When I review the top 4 picks for all the teams, I would rank this set near the bottom of the list
- Chris has done it before, but he is one of the weaker QBs.

4> Broncos
- Another solid looking defensive team with Ben, Matt, Drew and Duncan
- Solid overall lineup with many "clutch" play members, like Miguel Morris.
- Chambers is still the weakest QB in the league, but is getting better every year.

5> Patriots
- Colin and Mike give this team a chance every week, adding T.J. to that is going to make Mike even more effective
- Other than the top 5, this roster is not that impressive. I think this team will have trouble with deeper rosters

6> Browns
- Nick has the most solid team I remember him drafting in years.
- Phil, Frank and Giorgio are as good a top-3 as any other team in the league
- Also solid vets in the Clarkes, B.Smart, Hendry and Sami.
- Not 100% convinced about the D, but this team doesn't have much negative at first glance.

7> Redskins
- Not sure any team matches up with the height and strength of the Kings, all John has to do is learn to throw high.
- Some solid experience in the lower rounds to give John safety valves if the big throw isn't there.
- Sorry, but I have never been convinced that Carswell is a first rounder. Not sure he can carry a team the way others can in this league. Prove me wrong!!
- Not sure this lineup will be able to keep up with other teams speed

8> Ravens
- Always been a big fan of Mike Rafuse as a QB.
- Again, as good a top 3 as any other team in the league with DaSilva, young Raf and Matthews
- Unspectacular, although solid late picks in Carter and Oleksik and Eskins amongst others. Not sure they are deep enough...

-------
Overall
-------
3 teams stand out at the top when I look at the entire lineup.

Top 3 = Cowboys, Browns, Ravens

There are 3 teams that I see having big questions marks, but potentially could break into the top echelon.

Middle 3 - Steelers, Patriots, Packers

And 2 teams that I have a hard time seeing at the top of the standings...

Bottom 2 - Redskins and Broncos

If I insulted or upset anyone with my comments, sorry. You'll get over it by proving me wrong on the field
and then taunting me on the board.

Don't know if I can continue to be entertaining every week, but I will say what I think and will attempt to at least make picks every week, even if I lack the detail of the past...

See you later in the week for my week one picks...

Who the cares how each team will do this season. What matters is who you have on your fantasy team, Who is overrated? Who are sleepers? Here are my thoughts:

As for QBs, Colin should be the first QB drafted as he has two huge weapons that can turn a 10 yard hitch into an 80 yard score. Spack is a close second. Noah and Raf will be the 2nd tier, and Miller, Nick, Chambers, and TO will be late picks.

Elite
Although both TJ and Mike will get their catches, Colin will have a tough time keeping both of these guys happy, so they might have a reduction in production from other years. Neither of these team guys will complain, but I will if they are on my fantasy team. Dave Z will finally have an elite QB throwing to him, especially one that he has a relationship with. Except a monster year. Tim Wray is always atop the draft and this year will be no different. Noah also has some other options, but Tim is a perennial fixture atop the draft boards. Both Ben Blanche and Chris Heath have been elite in the past, but both will suffer from weaker QBs, and thus see a drop in production. Alex Carswell has a good QB with Miller, but doesn't have speed on his team to distract the D. The speedy defender will always lock up on Alex, thus minimizing his year. Matt Rafuse should have a big year with Dasilva taking some heat off of him but not scavaging TDs. Will Phil suffer from Nick trying to keep it in the family too much? I would be leery.

Sleepers

Tim McKaskie will have a big year playing for Spack and being low on his depth chart. Teams will have their hands full with Spack's young guys and vet Tim will have a field day. Similar story for Rodney Hubenig. Taking this guy late will prove fruitful. Taylor Eskins hasn't played for a few years, but he was once Spack's top target, so he should find a lot of space. Charles Higney had a breakout season last year, but will TO be able to get him the rock? If so, he may continue his ascension. Adam King playing out this year will be interesting. Teams will be focused in on his more established brother may give Adam the lesser matchup and Adam will benefit. Chambers has a great thing with Miguel. Look for that to continue this season. Nick had Nate Coates last season, so he knows what he can do. Can he use that information to help Nate move up a tier. I think so. Noah's mid picks in Craig, Jomo, Dan, and Glenn all have the potential to put up solid numbers as the Steelers should score points this season.

Defense/Special Teams

The Packers defense has the potential to be special, plus they will be on the field a lot since their offense will go 3 and out a lot. Patriots defense will be special if Mike and TJ can play 2 ways, as you know Colin wants them on O. Ravens D loses every height matchup. This is a team the Packers and Redskins can score on. Cowboys defense will be stingy. Redskins defense will not stop anyone all season. Steelers and Broncos D will both be mid pack.

Have you no say on the Browns defense? Why hast thou forsaken thy team "Cleveland"? Gimme some info on how our 'D' looks from the outside. Do we match up well vs the top tier teams?

Men of the WMFL, find below an excerpt of a letter sent to the executive with concerns about the draft. I believe that this captures all of the real concerns on behalf of the entire league. This is a call to action against the selfish and selfserving deviants who make up the executive.

Dear WMFL Executive
I am writing to you today to express my grave concern regarding what can only be described as blatant favoritism by members of the executive. Others have raised concerns, most anonymously, and while I respect each man's right to their opinion it is abundantly clear that those misguided souls have brought forward meritless concerns in an attempt to draw attention to the real and true inequitable actions of the excutive.
The true and only inequity in the draft was the obvious collusion between the executive and Chris Pierre, QB for the packers.
How else do you explain the complete and utter dominance of TO's draft? For goodness sake, I am on the team and even I can see it. This is a team who, when the history of the WMFL is written will go down as one of the epic defenses of our time! I have received information that both CFL and NFL teams have taken interest and will have observers at the field to learn amd emulate from this team.
While it may be too late to change teams and run a fair draft, I do trust that you as the executive representing all members will take it upon yourself to never provide this type of unfair advantage to a qB again. I believe I speak on behalf of the entire league when I highlight where the true favoritism lies, and with our desire for greater equity and transparency in the future.
As a final note, and upon which I must close this letter, I would like to serve on the executive in future, but when I asked my boss she said no.
Love,
Matt Snyder

Here's the issue you guys should tackle immediately. Why is it that in the year 2013, with the prevalence of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, the schedules and team lists are posted in some archeic format that these device cannot comprehend?

This isn't 1993, post the schedule and team lists in a format everyone can read.

C'mon man!

Raf, I love the 7.4; and Dunc out of 20 is solid! You a coupla bad bad men!
Carter, good try but i'd have expected more from the man who first introduced us to Millers exploits at the Inchon landing! C'mon back when you've got some gold.
Looking forward to the game this week, apologies in advance to what we will do to the Broncos!

Redskins vs Cowboys

Cowboys had a nice draft getting Dave Z in the 1st round and some solid picks after that. Redskins top pick Carswell out with ankle injury. Redskins will have trouble getting stops. Look for a high scoring game.

Cowboys by 17

Packers vs Broncos

Looks like TO drafted his team making sure no one could replace him at QB. This offence will struggle. Broncos look good defensively but they too will struggle on offence. Look for a low scoring game.

Broncos by 4

Patriots vs Browns

Top half of Patriot's roster is solid. The bottom half won't see the ball. I see this team having attendance issues as the season goes on. Nick had a good draft for a change. Will he spread the ball around like he needs to? Probably not.

Patriots by 10

Steelers vs Ravens

The game of the week. As with all of Noah's drafts team is built for offense. The Ravens have better balance but seam to be a little height challenged. Look for a high scoring close game.

Nice to see some new prognosticators on the board. Welcome to “The Line” and “Predictions”! I hope you two can stand up to the full season and don’t drop off like all the past pretenders as we get late into the season…

Week 1 is always a coin-toss week as it is nearly impossible to know how these drafted teams will gel. There are very few knowns… It is important to note, however, that every week is critical, as there are now only 7 regular season games. Many times teams look back and realize that the loss in the first week cost them a better playoff seed.

I have it on good authority that some teams may be missing key pieces as our professional touch players will be honing their craft on the fields in Belleville for the Ontario Touch Football Championships.

Only 4 games per week now. No more 8 AM game times.:-)) Here we go…

North 9:00 – Team 7 (Redskins - Miller) vs. Team 2 (Cowboys - Spack)

Spack has a solid lineup this year, top to bottom. It is a quick lineup too with Dave Z, Ryan, Jordan, Darryl C leading the way. This Redskins team doesn’t have the speed to keep up with this team. I can see Miller getting a couple of TDs in to the King duo, but I don’t see them keeping this very close.

-- Take the Cowboys

South 9:00 – Team 3 (Packers – Chris) vs. Team 4 (Broncos - Chambers)

The Pack is one team that will be affected by the Belleville tourney. I believe that the two Chris’s will be missing. The rest of the lineup is solid, but being short-handed and without their QB will cause problems against the experienced lineup that Chambers has put together. I see some big plays from Ben and Miguel leading Chambers to victory this week.

-- Take the Broncos

North 10:45 – Team 5 (Patriots - Colin) vs. Team 6 (Browns - Nick)

Some early trash-talking already as the ever-loud Frank calls out T.J. and Mike. Not sure I would want to be poking those bears with a stick anytime, let alone early in the season before your team actually plays a game. As I stated in my draft review, however, I think Nick has a deeper “team” than Colin. I can see Nick hitting Giorgio, Mario and Kent for TDs. Perhaps some of those lower picks on Colin’s roster will prove me wrong, but I don’t see it happening against the Browns.

-- Take the Browns

South 10:45 – Team 1 (Steelers - Noah) vs. Team 8 (Ravens – Mike)

Ravens are another team that may be decimated by the Belleville tourney. I believe the Raf brothers will be wearing Buckeye colours on Saturday. Not a good thing when you are facing Noah the gunslinger. I can see Glenn and Ben beating the Ravens deep, kind of like the Broncos did to the real Ravens last night. Without Rafback throwing the Ravens will struggle to
score.

-- Take the Steelers

Have fun everyone, and remember to leave it all out on the field.
