Sorry for the late update of the website after Week 3, beginning to sound like a broken record! The excuse this week…well, I had to wait for Burgundy to stop scoring on Black…oops, there’s another one. Next week will probably be late too - I’ll update from my hotel room Saturday night if I get the scores. Still two undefeated and two winless teams.

It seems to this bystander that there have been teams short-handed every week this year. Is it any worse than it has been in past years or is it just a mirage? I know this is just a recreational league, but it seems that more than ever people just can't commit to that 1-2 hours on a Saturday morning. Why? If you sign up to play in the league you should be committed to being there, shouldn't you?

Is there more to it than that? Should the league have gone with less teams with more players on each??

Thoughts...

It is not to hard to figure it out. If you don't have enough players to fill 10 teams, don't have 10 teams. It is not fun having to pick up players every time, if we had 8 teams this definitely would not be the case. We have done this enough in this league the past years, maybe we will learn something for next year!!!!

the issue is that the people that made the decision are the ones that only want 7 people to show up, so that their better players can play more. the fact is that life happens.. injuries happen. vacations happen. a full team should be no less than 12. even if all 12 show you are playing half the game. we should have been at 8 teams based on numbers. but if we were we may have not been witnessing the ascent of Wes as the next greatest QB in our league.

Some players don't show up, from what I can tell, because they don't like the team they are on. Some teams aren't really fun to come and participate with because of a number of things - QB doesn't spread the ball out being one of them, that and poor attitudes on part of some guys, not all by any means, but the poor sport attitudes exist and for people out trying to be competitive, have fun and be part of the 'team' this can be tough. All it takes is one guy to be hard to play with for guys to not show up.

That and of course, vacation, injuries, family or personal commitments play a factor - but if you don't like the team you're on, why come out? If you know you're just going to be relegated to minor duties on the team, why come out? Everyone wants to get their hands on the ball, contribute in some semi-significant way.

Looks like injuries have been happening quite regularly e.g. looks like orange had their way with gold after a few key injuries. UNderstand sportsmanship's comment. It literally boils down to whether somebody is having fun or not...Regardless of the team, it's always fun to enjoy the brisk, dewy mornings of late sept-oct...who the hell wants to play in the november cold?

If a team has a player that after 3 weeks of the season they have never seen, not heard from, or know they are gone with an injury..

That team should be allowed to ask for a player from the waiting list.

I don't know if the waiting list should be handled as first in first out, or approx skill matching

I agree that attendance is down this year across a lot of teams and there are probably multiple reasons, but if we have a waiting list, let's use it.

I like the smaller teams. It's nice being able to play 3/4 of the game or even the whole game. I mean I don't want to come out and sit on the sidelines for half the game. And if teams are short then just pick up some players as long as they aren't superstars.

Also we can try to keep the games on track time wise? Played at 11:00 last week didn't get home until like 1:30.

Scott a lot of us like to play a lot, but if your superstar doesn't show up, why not pick up a superstar, If we had enough players we would not have to pick up players. Lets be realistic not everyone in this league can play both ways like you stud. LOL!!

Lets make the league enjoyable, and if there is a waiting list get those guys out.

I'm with Scott, i like the smaller teams since it means more playing time and well i love the fellowship of the league it really is about playing the game. I played on a team a few years ago where everyone showed up - all 13 guys. It sucked, i played less than half the game a couple of times. THAT was a de-motivator to showing up!
I actually like that the league went with 10 teams even though enrollment was down, and would rather pick up a man or two than have gone with 8 teams and gotten less playing time.
Maybe if a team has just 6 they should be allowed to pick up one guy if their team wants so that guys can take a rest? I get that it can be hard playing the entire game (for lesser mortals, for me its all good), so maybe that balances things?
As for what you do if your superstar is missing, i think in the spirit of the league captains should be allowing somewhat comprable substitutions to make the games competitive and therefore fun, which is the other main reason we all come out. Some captains are dick's and don't allow comprable substitutions and shame on them - if winning it all in the WMFL is all they have going for them they have my pity. a couple years ago i played for Tim and he allowed a guy to sub in who was really good - it cost us the game, but it was the right thing to do cause the guy was replacing a #1 or 2 who was away.
I like the early post that recognizes going with 10 let the league see what Wes could do - he will win it all this year. Go Silver!

I agree with Snyder, except with the stuff about Wes.....

I love playing as much as possible and the roster sizes are good.

The league(exec) cannot predict if 3-4 players on each team will be no shows or if certain players won't play if drafted by certain qb's, as mentioned earlier.

I agree that other league members should be allowed to play if a team is short. The player and the missing player should be close in skill level.

But what's better for the league? Allowing a player regardless of skill level to fill in and everyone involved gets to play in a competitive and fun game, or making a team play short because a skill player would give that team an advantage.

Honestly, if Im playing a team with 5 or 6 players and TJ or mike hadden are the only people on the sideline, I'd rather let them play, maybe costing our team a win in the process. It's not fair to the 5-6 guys who showed up.

It's a completive league, but more importantly a fun league

We got our butts handed to us by silver this week, but it was fun.

I think promoting and encouraging new talent will bring more people to the league and ensure they'll want to show up each week

Tim

I also like the smaller team sizes, as Snyder said, I have played on teams where everyone showed every week, and that sucked! I would much rather play more than half the game. Also, I have never played on a team that has not let the other team pick up a player when short. There is always someone who would like to play another game.

I agree with folks that I'd rather play all game than to have 11 player show up. I've been on both sides there too.

However, I don't agree that it's a given that at game time a team can find another player on the sidelines. Most guys are heading out or are too tired.

I'm suggesting that if a team wants to request a player from a waiting list, they should be able to. Playing on a team with chronic low attendance can be just as much a pain in the rear as having 11 players every week.

I agree with Scott's comments about getting the game moving on time. Quick solutions:
1st: f the game is more or less done at 3mins or at 3 plays, let it go boys. If you the leading QB and up 3-4 scores and have the ball at that point, offer the other team game over (most will take it).

2nd: Turn around half time quicker. Every week I see teams hanging around at half for 5+mins???? 2 minute turn around at half is plenty and lets kick off the next games on time.

Just a couple thoughts!

In response to Dave, if a team knows they are going to be short one week post it on the board and see who wants to come out and fill in. Like Snyder I am more than happy to play more and would even show up for an 8 am game to help another team out, assuming I'm not playing against them. If there are any takers to the post then the opposing QB will know ahead of time who it is and make a decision from there. Just a thought.

Of course, what are the chances you would come to the 8:00 game only to be told by the opposing quarterback that he wasn't going to let you play. Hmmm...I'd say 1 in 10.

I believe we should just let whomever play, to play and fill in spots I'm tired of people crying about which players can be picked up and who cant play! since my team is already a all-star team if n e team is short a player you can get n e player you want or players!!!!! your still not going to win! team silver is the number one!!! If you see on the schedule your team against team sliver,I suggest you stay home with the wife and kids, wash the car, cut your grass etc cuz on the field your productivity wont be as much!

If I'm on the field and my team is playing you can bring who ever on your team so don't ask.

Tim Wray you need to shut your lip! I'm the best thing that's ever happened to you since k y jelly!!!!!

Also if a qb doesn't show up let a team use another qb or pick there qb. Everyone payed there money to play football!!! it takes the fun away to play against a team without qbs like team baby blue and teal!!! just to name a few.

Wes.. I like a good sports story, love an underdog battling against the odds. Tin Cup, wasn't that great? Romeo, give me another ball. Hahaha. How about Hoosiers? That short little skinny kid shooting the underhand free throws!! Classic. Crap, I'm pretty sure I cried during Rudy. And I hate Notre Dame.

But really, reality kicks in sometime, and sure, its a great little run you are on, and Silver should be proud of yourselves. But I'm pretty sure your streak is about to hit an abrupt halt Saturday morning. Navy will finally have a full squad out, and we will have something to prove. So spend the week watching The Rookie and Friday Night Lights because the fairy tale season will end Saturday, or at least take a week off.

Use that for bulletin board material.

Sure I've seen The Program, but how about Any Given Sunday? I'm thinking our version would be Any Given Saturday Wes will bite on every pump fake.

Truth be told, I haven't played for the past 2 weeks, so I'm psyched to just get out and play and looking forward to playing what I am hearing is a very fine Silver team. And Glenn, one day I will throw to you when you are on my team, just won't be this Saturday. And if Snyder can play one of your short corners in your trivial 3-3 zone I would appreciate that as well.

Black was missing
Drew – (QB)
Alex – (1st pick who is yet to show)
Rodney – (2nd pick)
Stewart
Dave Chappell

This left Duncan as the QB against a full Spackman roster. In true Spackman (cl)ass, he kept the score to 80-0.

Well Black… if you pull off some wins this year and loose the tie breaker due to points against, you know who to thank.

Now that’s some spirit of the league!

actually, i didn't hear burgundy ask if we wanted to stop, the refs did. team black (not just i) elected to continue as we were out there to play football...if we were just out there to win we would've walked off the field long before burgundy went up 64-0 (which is when the offer was made).

team black didn't complain, hasn't complained on these boards or on the field. everyone knows what spackman's all about, there is nothing more that needs to be said. i'm not usually one to give spackman the benefit of the doubt, but maybe, just maybe...

was it within the spirit of the league to go for a td on 2nd-&-catch when up 48 late in the game? not really, but i'm sure spackman was taking advantage of an opportunity to better his team for future similar situations in closer games, not trying to embarrass his already beaten opponents.

was it necessary to complain about an offside call that wasn't made after having completed a successful td conversion to go up 56-0? not really, but spackman is all about the betterment of the league, so he was probably just taking advantage of a learning opportunity for the refs so that they would do a better job the next time out.

do i think it was necessary to run a hurry up offense against a team with 6 players when you were up by 60? not really, but maybe they just wanted to score quickly so we could have the ball back and get another chance to score.

after supposedly having offered to call the game earlier, should spackman have downed the ball when we got to 3 plays and they had the opportunity to do so with the ball on our 5 yard line instead of trying to run the score to 80-0? perhaps, but hey, 80 points is 80 points, i'm sure every other team would have done the same thing with the chance to score 80 on the line, wouldn't they?

is there a tinge of sarcasm in my post...not really...well, i'll let you decide.

have fun out there boys, that's what it's all about.

Actually it wasn't Duncan's call As a team we said we would finish the game no matter what the outcome. Don't know how many balls were thrown to you Clay, I just remember Raf running the same pattern for scores over and over again. We obviously didnot have the manpower to defend man to man and playing without the top half of the draft made it difficult, however there is no quiters on Black. I don't think anyone would call you, personally, unsportsmanlike in this game.

On a serious note, i appreciate Carter's recognition of my complete supremacy of all things defensive, but feel compelled to point out that it isn't me, its the collective dominance of the silver dream team. For all of you who have hopes that your children can some day be top defenders, might want to:

Running up the score like that is a bit ridiculous. When a team has a big lead like that, it would be more beneficial to them to try and keep their lesser skilled players more involved. By throwing to your hat picks and low round draft choices you may score less points (and have more drops, maybe some bad patterns resulting in picks, etc), but you also get the chance of:

a) developing their skill set
b) allowing everybody to have some fun.

Games like this are the reason why people might shy away from this league (on both Burgundy and Black, or from anybody who watched this debacle unfold). But trying to hang 80 on a team by throwing to Raf and Tank (i wasn't there, but i've seen similar things before, so i'm hazarding a guess) is pointless. After the score was 30-0, both teams probably knew that nobody could cover Raf -- what's the point of continuing to throw it to him after that?

Anyways, this is all just the opinion of somebody who can't seem to stay healthy enough to get on a football field these days.

TJ.

Well, I did say that down was the only way to go… 2-3 last week. It’s getting hard to predict winners when you can’t be sure who is actually going to show up for teams…

Perhaps that is why all of my peers, like MMQB, Tipster, TJ Berman, WMFL Scout, BCS, Underdog and JAnthony, seem to have disappeared from the face of the earth… I must say that it is disappointing that all of these folks have dropped out.

In saying that, I shouldn’t forget to welcome “One Play” to the board. It's nice to at least have one other person here attempting to entertain the board and pick some games!

Anyhow, one thing you will learn about me is that I never give up. I will keep picking these games even if I keep getting under 50% right.

10-5 for the season. No need to give up on my new technique yet. Time to get back to the winning ways.

Henry North - 8:00 - Silver vs Navy

Wes < Noah, J.Schleif = DaSilva, M.Schleif = Matthews, Fletcher = Quane, Snyder = Imai, Martin = McCaskie, Clarkins/Lungrin/Meyer/Zmozynski > Benson/Fowler/Dunnett/Charmley

Navy couldn’t get many out at 8:00 last week, but if I read correctly Noah will be back this week. Silver is on a roll and Wes is extremely confident. I still can’t give him the edge over Noah, but his late round additions are certainly better than Navy’s. I will jump on the bandwagon…

Take SILVER

Henry South - 9:30 – Red vs Black

A.King > Walker, Dehaney < Carswell, W.King = Eskins, Klassen > McDonald, Verville > Best, Young < Dionne, Crouter/Heighways/Scanga/Higney < Carter/Chappelle/Clarks

Red got off the schneid last week with a win over the undermanned Navy squad. Black stuck it out in a tough situation against Burgundy. This will be a closer game than many expect, but I simply can’t see Black winning it… (I truly hope they get their whole team out this week, though)

Take RED

Henry North - 9:30 - Baby vs Gold

Pierre < Mikos, Bradimore = Heath, Brooks < Glover, Siekowski = S.Bird, Sabadin > P.Bird, Hubenig = El-Hajjeh, Schulz/Greatrix/Benight/Massey > Sederis/Phllips/Hickson

I truly thought Baby would get a win last week, I really did. Disappointing loss, but again they seemed to be short some important pieces. Another team having issues with guys showing up is Gold. No idea who to expect to be at the field this week. The first two weeks couldn’t have been fluky, could they? If they get their lineup out…

Take GOLD

Henry South - 11:00 – Green vs Teal

Miller > Chambers, Wray = Blanche, Payne = Alexander, Carquez < Hackett, Hanley = Marshall, Cain < Morris, Warburton/Neznik/Wod/Highney > Newberry/McKeon/Livingston/Blandford/Curcio

Green was a disappointment last week as they couldn’t keep up with Silver. Teal got a hard-fought win against Baby, but this one will be a much tougher task. I see some advantages for Teal in a few spots, but I just can’t pick them to win this for some reason.

Take GREEN

Henry North - 11:00 – Burgundy vs Orange

Spackman = C.Hadden, Katradis = M.Hadden, Rafuse > B.Smart, Elkington = Hendry, Thompson < R.Hadden, Rigg < Big Pete, Oleksik/Jeune/Roskar < Hazlett/Harding/Julien/King

There will be no 80 points put up in this game, although both teams will probably score every time they have the ball. I understand from my insiders that there may be some issues with Hadden(s) attendance this week due to a family wedding Friday night. I am not sure it will matter either way as Spack seems to have this team rolling along…

Take BURGUNDY

Let’s keep the Spirit of this League positive everyone. Don’t let one person bring it down.

Have fun and remember to leave it all out on the field boys!!

Schultzy

... and it cut out the part where I suggested that maybe Nick was Schultzy? Or when I wondered if maybe Frank the Tank had just raised his profile by virtue of his trash talkin' ways.

Me no worky new trash talky good like.

Sorry for the late post just looking at the board to see who will show up this week?

8:00 - Silver vs. Navy
Noah's back! Noah’s back! Good for Navy bad for Silver. Still I well pick Silver in a very Close Game

Silver by ONE PLAY

9:30 – Red vs. Black
Hopefully everyone shows up for this game.
Red by more than ONE Play

9:30 - Baby vs Gold
I’m going with Baby on this one they are looking for a BIG W and will get it with a injured Schultzy (I mean Nick)

Baby by more than ONE PLAY

11:00 – Green vs Teal
Green lost to Silver and Teal wins one But I think Green will win this ONE

Green By only ONE PLAY

11:00 – Burgundy vs Orange

Haddens might be missing or will they

Going with Orange. Haddens will show.

Orange by only ONE PLAY

I guess Silver's magical season continues, too bad Wes wasn't there to tell me about it.

Great game Silver, lots of fun. Look forward to meeting you again in the playoffs.

Funny how only 1 Rafuse is on the Burgundy team list. Pretty sure I saw two of them playing today...

Thanks to the Miller and Green for a good game today. We were short 2, they allowed us to pick up 2 until 1 extra showed up. We had 1 guy get injured in the second half, they offered to play 5 on 5 or pick up someone from the sidelines to fill the gap. They definately exemplified the Spirit of the League today.

Wes, your backup QB was outstanding. Heck, you may be the 3rd best QB on your team!! I heard rumblings from your team that they might want you to stay out West.

You know I'm teasing Wes. You got a good team there, do something with it.

Silver, take the WR screen out of the playbook though.
