Everybody's got a win, everybody but Burgundy has a loss. We all wish Wes well on a speedy recovery from the Burgundy Flu he came down with last week, hopefully he was able to find the required remedy in Saskatchewan.

Two more weeks to go in the regular season, if it all ended today we'd have a rematch of the epic 80-0 Burgundy-Black game...yes, that's right, Black has climbed into the top 8, call Ripley's!

As recently as last year the Exec had a fair process to bring new players into the league - post draft. In effect there had to be either 3 or more teams (needing players) randomly drawing for 3 or more new players seeking a team. At a minimum if only 1 new player was available there had to be at least 3 teams involved in the draw, to keep it random. If 3 or more players were available and only 1 team needed a player, then that team had to randomly draw a single name from that pool of 3+ players. From the evidence presented it appears that due process is no longer being followed.
How did this happen?
Has the WMFL reverted to a system whereby top players simply avoid the draft, so they can slip onto the team of their choice via back door after the season is under way?
Who on the Exec is making (or looking the other way) on these decisions?
The whole point of the draft was to treat all players and all teams with equal fairness. The proper thing to do in this case would be to put Raf jr's name into a hat and give all teams an equal chance to randomly draw his name

Even if Spack had lost Jomo and was down a player, the exec should take a look at his team, and realize he was 4-0, and possible move a mid tier player from say Black who was 0-4, and move Raf Jr. to Black. Thats how it should work. The exec cannot control the draft, and 10s hiding in blocks, and other shenanigans are going to happen but Raf Jr should never have been placed on a dominate Spack team watching him the last few weeks light up other teams is an insult to the process.

the exec needs to look at this.

Lets face it, the league is broken. The executive can do what they want with this but here's how I would fix it.

DROP DOWN TO EIGHT TEAMS!!!

This simple thing would have such a ripple effect it would be staggering. If you only accept the first 96 applications the executive isn't stuck making poor decisions the day of the draft to accomodate the requests of people who should have sent their money in a month ago. 12 players on each team means all these forfiets and scrambling for players ends. It strengthens the QB pool. All 96 players intersect with each other gameday and the camraderie is rebuilt. The games end by noon AND people get to sleep in an extra hour, instead of those stupid 8AM games. This bitching about players avoiding the draft and getting "placed" on teams as the league roster is set by mid August at the latest.

Make the league something it hasn't been in awhile...special!!! If people are falling over themselves trying to be one of the first ones to get their application in for fear of not securing a roster spot, instead of being able to show up at whatever horseshit leisurely pace they want to stroll in five minutes before the draft, you have fundementally made the league something important again, instead of a warm up for Oshawa the next day.

In response to player placement.
Immediately after the draft two players requested to be placed on the next available team. The players were Darren Cholod and Raf JR. Due to blocks coming out of the hat, there were two teams left with only 9 players, Gold and Burgundy. There was no question that a player like Darren would give any team a significant advantage. Additionally, we did not want to set a precedent that would allow every 10 in the league to enter late and essentially "come out of the hat". The executive felt that it would be best to allow a few weeks to pass and then re-evaluate the waiting list players to ensure that the teams to which they were assigned did not drastically alter the competitive balance of the league.

3 weeks in we had received two more late requests. At this point Darren removed himself from the waiting list as he was unsure how many games he'd be able to attend. There were 3 players on the waiting list list (Raf JR, Andy Miller and a new player to the league with previous football experience). There were also 3 teams in need of players (Gold, Burgundy (who only had 9 to begin with and a player yet to show), and Black). All players were required to pay in full prior to stepping onto the field.

With Darren's name not long in the hat, we felt that remaining players were relatively equal and no-one would greatly affect the competitive balance of the league. Raf JR had played in the league before but was decent but by no means a 10. As Burgundy required a player and this league has always been lenient towards allowing family to play together, it was deemed that Raf JR should be allowed to join team Burgundy. We did not want a new player to the league to become discouraged playing on the last place team so he was assigned to Gold. Leaving Andy, who was assigned to Black.

If Raf JR. is indeed a 10, he certainly was not the last time he played in the league. It is impossible to say if his skills have improved greatly since we were last able to evaluate him, or if he was simply a decent player added to a team that was already strong which ultimately made him look that much better. Regardless adding him to team Burgundy was the decision made, with the information available at the time.

One thing I have learned over the years in a work environment: If there is a lack of information from above, people will fill the void with rumours.

Why don't we use this web service to post league news? When the exec was adding players weeks ago, why not post it here. It's not like we have a newsletter or league meetings.

I want to thank the Exec for getting me on a team late since I had just moved back to the area, even though they knew I was commuting from Peterborough to come play.

I am happy to have joined team Black with Drew and Stewie Gonzalez who are guys I had known from before this season, and even knowing that they were coming off some difficult losses.

Nice win on Saturday Team Black, especially our 3rd and Duncan plays!

I agree with Dave that when things like this are handled "behind closed doors", the outcome is always going to be questioned ... isn't that what happened when the Cavaliers "won" the draft lottery for LeBron James?

As for Matt Rafuse, he may not have been a 10 before, but he was a very good player. And offensively, he's clearly a 5 out of 5, particularly if Spackman is throwing him the ball and he's being covered by other teams #2 or #3.

I was always for growth in this league, and mistakenly always believed that having more teams allowed for more players and would in turn grow the league, but I've definitely changed my mind on that stance. I agree that we should accept applications until a set period -- be that a week before the draft or even the day of -- and then cap the teams based on how many players have signed up.

If there are really good players out there that are on the fence but who clearly know about the league -- like Cholod and Rafuse Jr., and in previous years Rob Edwards -- this will force them to either pay their money and secure their spot, or wait until next year.

It's not an ideal situation, but unfortunately without doing something nothing will change:

"If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you always got".

TJ.

Sources tell me that Cholod is blocked with SeaBiscuit Green is now the best team in the league.

Wait, I just received a text message saying that Spackman has a contract offer out to Terrell Owens, but that deal is contingent on the Real T.O. passing a full physical. Should Terrell Owens' knee prove to be fully recovered and he opts to accept the offer, his career NFL statistics of 1078 receptions for 15,934 yards and 153 touchdowns figure to make him an above average target for Spackman, returning Burgundy to "top dog" status.

Every team should start looking for ringers, as winning by 80 points and getting a free t-shirt at the end of the year is what this league is all about!

Neeraj,

You must have misunderstood. We already have a backup QB in Tim. He's got the height thing going on just like you. We can use you to go over game tape for us though, maybe highlighting the good plays by the next team we play. We play Drew's black team this week, it should take you about 20 seconds.

Changing the topic a bit. Duncan and Drew, anyway we can restrict this board to guys that play in the league only? Keeps the rif Raf out.

Did I just trash 13 guys in a few sentences? I'm getting good at this trash talk thing. Just need to back it up on the field!!

What is this I see when I look at the standings? Green ahead of Silver? We defeated Green in head-to-head action, so clearly a tie is broken by point differential. We should probably either change that rule (if in fact it is a 'rule' - but don;t worry, Duncan will find a way to both mock me and introduce learning through the quotation of a 'rule'. This is his special skill) OR maybe we should stop giving Spackman a hard time for riding up the score on teams. Bad parenting, we tell spackman one thing but our rules force him to do the opposite. What choice does he really have given everything at stake? Kind of like offering Spack a player who the honourable and trustworthy real-TJ has identified as an offensive 5 - we tell Spack to play fair but then what do we do? We give him a very questionable advantage, and how can we expect him to resist taking that advantage? Still, Silver puts Burgandy down in the playoffs, guaranteed. Speaking of which, Gold goes down this week, and Black the week after. Silver is unstopable, and soon the belt will be ours!

From the sounda of how you've been playing, some consider me more active than a certain U- loving , short on personality as well as stature QB.

So you better be careful what you ask duncan for our that may have been your last post.

As for scouting: 22-14 for the taller, better looking bald QB.

Before I begin my response to Snyder (and I'll try to use small words, made up words and throw in some misspellings so you feel at home - you know, like your QB was talking to you), let me ask ... who's this Neeraj guy? I have a vague recollection of a guy named Najeer who used to play in the league - tall guy, bad knees, not really good hands...could this be him?

Now, on to da tie-brakers (this bad spelling is not easy, I'm gaining a new respect for Wes). First, I can see why it is of importance to you, after all, home field advantage in the second round of the playoffs is at stake here (unless you are upset by a Navy or an Orange...). The rule states, "tie-breakers for Final Standings will be record in games involving tied teams followed by Points Against and then Points For/Against Differential." So, for the Final Standings I will incorporate the head-to-head matchups in the determination of the standings (actually Drew will, I'm going to be smoking a cigar with Castro in Cuba), but during the regular season because not all teams have played one another yet and because the programming to prepare the standings incorporating this logic would be too hard and because I don't want to edit the results by hand when it just doesn't matter, the Weekly Standings use points against followed by point differential in determining tie-breaks. Hope this helps.

Dear Noah, Neeraj and the rest of team WTFUR.

I would like to thank you for officially inviting me into your inner circle of witty banter.

Thanks again,
Drew

PS: The WMFL dictionary defines Team WTFUR as “Non-white, probably not black, maybe something else in there too past and present WMFL players.” It's half acronym, half "text talk" for “Whatever The F*** You Are”

PPS: Do we have to invite Jomo into Team WTFUR or is he already a member

Dear WMFL Executive

I know Wes feels that players can just be randomly assigned to teams but I wish to follow proper process. I would like to formally request a player trade. I feel my proposed offer that is more than fair. I think Neeraj is a nice guy and like to see him back in the league. Our team currently has a full roster, but are reluctantly willing to trade KT.

We feel this trade is fair and should in no way affect the competitive balance of the league. Below I have provided a brief comparison.

KT – Comes out to every game, never complains or gives the refs a hard time
Neeraj – Comes out when his wife says he’s allowed and claims to always be open when he’s not

KT – Sometimes has trouble in the wind, but otherwise never drops a well placed ball.
Neeraj – Couldn’t catch a cold.

KT – Has played strong through at least 3 WMFL seasons.
Neeraj – Can’t make it threw a 3 game snow bowl without getting hurt.

KT – Good strong legs.
Neeraj – Let’s face it. He’s a crippled gimp.

KT – Has no hair
Neeraj – Has more hair than any self respecting heterosexual male should. He wife complains about excessive hair in other places as well.

KT – His full name “Kicking Tee” is easy to pronounce.
Neeraj – Can we get Neeraj phonetically spelled on team sheets? I’ve hear Neer-aj, Nerg, Knee-rag. Essentially when I hear any name that starts with “N” and ends with a “J” sound (be it 1, 2 or 3 syllables) we have to assume it’s Neeraj. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone even try to pronounce his last name.

I respectfully await the WMFL’s decision regarding this trade.

Drew

There is no way the above poster was Drew Walker. I didn't notice a single spelling or grammar mistake in the whole post. Also there isn't the drew staple of switching around two homonyms (ie. censor and sensor). So that being said don't be too mad at Drew on Saturday KT it wasn't actually him that made the post. Although I think KT may be looking for a trade as he gets very little use on team Black. Unfortunately for KT Burgundy already has a strong KT of their own and are not looking to upgrade at this point. :)

Well done Drew, excellent post!
Looking around the league and reading some recent posts i am seeing a terrible anti-bald prejudice beginning to surface. This is disturbing, and is a clear sign of jealousy on the part of our hairier more neanderthal-like cousins.
So,in addition to the WTFUR, what about an all bald team next year. Noah, Drew, Darrell Cain, me, Jomo, Roskar, Klassen after a 3-day bender in Saskatchewan, Miller in those pictures when he got shot down and captured during WW2 by da germans and they shaved his head, etc.
Long live the hairless!

My Children;
Silver let me down last week, otherwise perfect with my picks yet again. They let JC down even more, who has to cough up 15 virgins. you know how hard it is to find 15 virgins in heaven? it is paradise, so what do you think goes on . . .
On to my picks for this week.
Green/Burgandy - a tough game to call. With Burgandy having the Rafuse brothers my first inclination is to consider going with them. The thing is, Tim and Ben should be able to keep up and dominate them. That leaves Frank as the only real offensive weapon spackman has - and he doesn't have the juice to carry Burgandy. So give me Green.
Teal/Orange - On paper these teams actually look fairly close. That is, until you consider QB play. Colin is a constant high performer and he has his brother Mike who tears it up everytime he hits the field. I see Big Pete and Todd Julien as the difference makers though, as Teal will keep Ben on Mike and neutralize him somewhat. Chambers needs a big game to keep it close.
Gold/Silver - Nick needs someone to draft for him next year, maybe JJ will be out of prison and available by then. Nick has no chance in what will be a revenge game for a Silver team who was embarrased last week.
Baby/Red - King and his band of merry red men should win this one fairly easily. Solid drafting, and a team that is playing together better every week - don;t discount these guys in the playoffs, but for now they will win over Baby who just hasn;t been able to come together. Baby, your only chance is to pray real hard to me that i fix all the shit that's wrong with TJ over the next couple of days. That's not loud enough Matt, pray louder.
Black/Navy - I wish i could go with black AND with Noah, but even i can't do that. A great actor once said, "Always bet on black", and while i haven't done much of that this season it is my favourite movie and this once i am going to go for it. black with an upset victory - drew picks noah twice, and carswell scores three times.
That, my children, is all for this week.

With all of this controversy regarding fairness of the draft process and putting players on teams, etc, I have a few suggestions. These type of issues happen every year, so they are not new. How about this:

1.) Any new players to the league (unknown to the exec) attend an hour scrimmage game the weekend before the draft. Drafting QBs are welcome to attend, and so are the exec. They can all play. From this scrimmage, everyone will have a ballpark idea of the skill level and athletiscm of new players. This will be published either formally or informally. Everyone will know.

2.) The hat is scrapped. Everyone is available to be drafted at any time. And we draft all 10 or 11 rounds. The QBS draft the teams as it is done today. Here's the catch. Once the teams are made. The QBs pick numbers out of a hat (so maybe the hat isn't scapped). These numbers represent the teams. So, essentially, just because a QB drafted a team, odds are that team will be playing for another QB.

What this will accomplish is motivate the QBs to pick fair teams, eliminate biases, and not have the surprise hat pick. This will allow parity in the league, and there will be no accusations of any funny business in the draft or thereafter.

3.) Finally, a waiting list will be kept, and it will be at the descretion of the exec to ensure that players on the list do not help really good teams or worsen bad teams.

Just some random thoughts as I love this league, and want to see it be as good as it could possibly be.

Great points Noah

Miller and I discussed these same recommendations for the league.

I think the open practice is very good for welcoming new players and evaluating talent.

I also agree about the draft idea, I have heard one argument about drafting all 10-11 rounds is that the players being selected in the last few rounds may not enjoy it. Ajax drafts every round with no hat picks, without any problems. I would recommend that the last two rounds are a silent draft with each qb going to Duncan with their pick. Just a thought

The waiver/late season player addition process could use some tweaking.
I think if we go to 8 teams or have a healthier amount of players for 10 teams for next season, there may not be room to add players

I think everyone in the league needs to help recruit new players. I think we as a league need to find a way to keep these players coming back year after year.

Tim

I agree with Noah on new editions ex. Coito,Kakakari and late additions have always been a problem with the balance of the league. I remember my first year me and Walker joined late to already good team. Also hat picks should be scrapped and just draft all rounds we did it in Ajax with no problems. Also get another defender or go to 4 steamboats. As a league we have enough qbs to do it.
Keep the rift Raf out too. Go Hurricanes.

4 out of 5 last week Tie go’s to me (look at my post ).
This week looks like Burgundy’s team has another top team to play. Will Silver rebound? Black with another win!
Navy snuck a win by ONE PLAY! Red is as good as Orange

8:00 3 - Green (Miller) 10 - Burgundy (Spack)
I think Green has a good chance at winning this game but I just can’t pick against the mighty Burgundy Spack team on this one

Burgundy by more than ONE PLAY

9:30 6 - Silver (Wes) 8 - Gold (Nick)
Look for Silver to tear it up this week after getting schooled by the Burgundy team. Nick looks like he has a full team now and looks better than before..

Silver by more than ONE PLAY

9:30 9 - Orange (Colin) 1 - Teal (Chambers)
Orange should peel away from Teal and should win this one.

Orange by more than ONE PLAY

11:00 4 - Navy (Noah) 7 - Black (Drew)
Battle of the bald

Navy by more than ONE PLAY

11:00 5 - Red (King) 2 - Baby (T.0.)
The baby team has disappointed me I thought they would be better. I like the Red team and see them doing well in the play offs

My bad Carter, you are absolutely right.
Truth is that we are probably all related to John, going back far enough in our family trees.
For example, you can see the resemblance between Klassen and Miller - clearly regressive genes showing through, likely from Johnny's time with the RCMP detachment in Regina immediately proceeding his role in capturing Louis Riel.
Evidence contained in the photo below. Johnny is fourth from the left.

WMFL, as we approach rememberance day, do not forget the significant contribution that John Miller has made in all the wars Canada has ever fought. Thank you for my freedom John. Thank you for all of our freedom.

Time for the stretch drive! Everyone trying to get themselves into a better position for the playoff run. Most important is to just get your team playing at the top of their game, so that a run can be made to the Championship. At this time of year it is not necessarily the most talent that wins, but the team that is playing best as a whole. Confidence is a very strong factor.

The bottom of the standings is still up-in-the-air. The teams with 3 wins should feel fairly safe, but from there down anything can happen. Black made a play for a top-8 spot last weekend with their win over Teal. They have a tough finish with Navy and Silver, while Baby has to play Red and Orange, and Teal plays Orange and Navy. The defending champ is not out-of-the-woods yet. They should be OK if they win one of their final two against Teal and Baby.

At the top of the standings we have another “game-of-the-year” this week with Green battling Burgundy. I sure hope it’s more entertaining that the Silver-Burgundy dud from last week. I think more people turned to watch the Red-Orange game last week as it went right down to the wire.

2-2-1 last week, making me 23-10-2 on the season. Disappointing Silver effort against Burgundy and the Black win (wow did they have like 10 guys there??) were my losses.

Onto this weeks games…

Henry North - 8:00 – Burgundy vs. Green

Spackman = Miller, Katradis < Wray, Mike Rafuse = Payne, Elkington > Carquez, Thompson = Hanley, Matt Rafuse = Cain, Oleksik/Jeune/Roskar = Warburton/Neznik/Wodd/Highney

Before anyone says it, yes I have put Spack and Miller on a level plane here. Both are playing fantastic right now. Past experience would favour Spack, but as of right now they are both having great years. The Green lineup has shown itself to be very strong and might be the best one in the league to match-up against the Burgundy juggernaut. I am tempted to pick the upset in this one, but I just can’t do it.

Take BURGUNDY

Henry South - 9:30 – Teal vs. Orange

Chambers < C.Hadden, Blanche = M.Hadden, Eskins = B.Smart, Hackett = Hendry, Marshall < R.Hadden, Morris = Big Pete, Newberry/McKeon/Livingston/Blandford/Curci < Hazlett/Harding/Julien/King

Both teams need this win to try and clinch a spot in the top 8. Both teams have been that disappointing so far this season. It was nice to hear that Orange had a full team out last week. Perhaps the tie is the first in a series of games to get them on a roll for the playoffs. I really though that Chambers would contend with this team this year, but they haven’t played well at all.

Take ORANGE

Henry North - 9:30 – Gold vs. Silver

Nick = Wes, Heath < J.Schleiff, Glover = M.Schleiff, S.Bird > Fletcher, P.Bird < Snyder, El-Hajjeh = Martin, Sederis/Phllips/Hickson < Clarkins/Lungrin/Meyer/Zmozynski

Precious Metals Bowl 2011. Silver coming off a tough beat down at the hands of Spack and Burgundy. Gold coming off a tough loss to Navy last week and a couple of losses in a row. May be they were better when their full team didn’t actually show up?? Still lots of talk from Silver this week; they are a confident group. I see them bouncing back in a big way!

Take SILVER

Henry South - 11:00 – Baby vs. Red

Pierre < A.King, Bradimore > Dehaney, Brooks < W.King, Siekowski = Klassen, Sabadin < Verville, Hubenig > Young, Schulz/Greatrix/Benight/Massey = Crouter/Heighways/Scanga/Higney

Just when I thought they had figured this thing out in baby-land, they go out and get beat handily by Green last week. I switched the Pierre/Bradimore tag-team around again. Not sure who is going to throw more often. They won with TJ throwing the week before and then lost last week with Chris throwing. Do we have a QB controversy?? Baby needs a win to try and get out of the bottom-2. Red is playing great, but couldn’t hang onto the victory last week against Orange. Not sure why I am doing this, but I am going to go out on a limb…

Take BABY

Henry North - 11:00 – Black vs. Navy

Walker < Noah, Carswell < DaSilva, Eskins = Matthews, McDonald > Quane, Best < Imai, Dionne < McCaskie, Carter/Chappelle/Clarks > Benson/Fowler/Dunnett/Charmley

Navy got a much needed win last week and will be trying to keep to momentum going against a Black team that finally had it’s lineup out and won a big one last week to keep their top-8 hopes alive. Navy has much more talent than Teal, however, and won’t be as easy to best this week. I think Noah is going to have himself a good day and keep this team on a roll…

Take NAVY

I was going to say something about all the controversy with adding players, but I think it best that I focus on the game-action rather than the front-office politics. Oh, what the hell!

Suffice to say that I believe that the league needs to make sure it puts all it’s rule, regulations and processes out there for everyone to see. That way a situation like this one never have to rise up again…

Have fun and remember to leave it all out on the field boys!!

The thing that makes Burgundy's record even more impressive is the attendance so far this year. I have a prepared a summary below.

QB - Spack (2 games missed)
1st pick - Frank (2 games missed)
2nd pick - Raf (1 game missed)
3rd pick - Scott (0 games missed)
4th pick - Clay (2 games missed)
5th pick - Jomo (7 games missed)
6th pick - Steve (0 games missed)
7th pick - Stevins (0 games missed)
8th pick - Kevin (2 games missed)
Mid season pickup - Matt (3 games missed).

Just shows we are an all around team that can still win games even if we are missing key players. When we have our full team out we are unstoppable.

who cares about Burgundy's attendance?
really, who cares?
did the teams you played against have a full roster out every week?
really, who cares?
i hope the author of this post didn't hurt his shoulder too badly patting himself on the back or poor Burgundy might be missing another player this week!
really, anyone out there care?

The funny thing about Burgandy's attendance is that the players that played the most games have to lowest total in-game minutes.

You're right, you are an all around team!

Real justifcation there for adding a player that would have been blocked with Raf and would have meant Scott would be on another team as i don;t think we have 3 player bolcks

Not saying it's right but I am constantly hearing teams go on and on about how their record would be better but they have been missing their number one pick or their QB for xx number of weeks. I'm sure the above poster was merely trying to point out that Burgundy has had the same issues as those teams and are still undefeated.
