First week of playoffs is over with, two lower seeds winning, the Redskins who get to face the first place Patriots for a chance at the big prize. The Broncos also took care of the Steelers, but that only got them out of reffing this week and a slightly easier draw than the Steelers. So it's Pats-skins and Cowboys-Packers in the other semi-final. On the Losers' side, well, it's everybody else.

Speaking of reffing, and before I hear about this, sorry 49ers, Redskins and Giants, you’re reffing again...I'll definitely have to re-look at that schedule next year! Of course had the Redskins not upset the 49ers then I'm pretty sure this wouldn't have happened, so blame Noah, Chambers or even Mother Nature as the rain held off!

How does the reffing make any sense? The five teams that didnt ref this week should ref next week. How do the packers, cowboys, and especially broncos not have to ref, while the skins are in the top 4 and have to ref again?

How about bypass the formula an just make it fair an let the other teams ref. ?

This happened last year also i guess we need at least three years to figure out a fair system. Or as was previously stated slot in the other teams that have not reffed yet.

everybody remembers when it happened to them that they had to ref twice...nobody remembers the year they didn't have to ref at all.

and yes, the schedule-maker's team didn't ref first or second week...we were smart enough to finish last but knew that we'd be able to beat whoever finished 9th so we'd get out of reffing.

here are the options: set the reffing schedule up in advance with the assumption that no upsets happen and try to even it out as much as possible so that people know when they're going to ref in advance (of course upsets happen and teams end up reffing twice...) OR set the reffing schedule up one week at a time based on what the exec thinks is the fairest. doesn't matter to me, when the schedule was set the support was for the former, if it makes more sense to do the latte then go ahead!

PS the Broncos did help out reffing a game today because one team was short refs.

My vote is set the reffing up one week at a time in the playoffs. No one thinks two - three weeks down the road if they are reffing and then think I should change my plans to make sure I'm there, it's more like whoever is available that week refs.

Hey Giants!

As a penance for being up north and missing round 1 of playoffs (I was wearing my Ravens sweater cutting up fallen trees)..

I'm avail to assist with reffing at the 8am game. I live just down the street. (you think I ride my bike far??)

Let me know here if you want to take me up on that.

Hey Ravens:

Everybody played a great game this past weekend against the Patriots. Lots of good patterns, good catches, nice yards after catch, good defense all around -- we just came up a couple of plays short against a really good team. We did a nice job of limiting the damage by Hadden and DaSilva, and the Patriots did a great job of spreading the ball around and making plays.

Saturday was one of those really fun games to be a part of, and although we lost this time, games like that define what this league should be all about.

Thanks to everybody who made it happen.

Ray Ray.

This is the dream matchup, but would have been much better as the final. Winner of this game is the champion.

Good job beating us down last week Packers. It hurt, but a good kind of hurt since it means we get another shot at stomping all over the Ravens this week!
So thank you for taking advantage of the stupid shit we did (and didn't) do, for playing well, and yes, even for schooling me personally on a couple of plays.
Answer me this though - would you have won if Cain had not hypnotized Klassen? If Steve had not made effective use of a bald voodoo doll with a sick moustache? If Tank had not assaulted Stu's knee with his quad? If Raf had not snuck into Nick's house and replaced his plays with 'knots of america' quick reference cards? I guess we'll never know . . .

We play the Giants this week, so if you're going to miss a game, this is the one. To make sure we avoid a forfeit, if you cannot make the game, please send your younger sister to take your place.

You should never overlook an opponent, but then again, has there ever been a "team" so poorly assembled as the WMFL Giants? If you're a gambling man, this would be a good game to mortgage the house and max out your line of credit on.

Love,
Ray Ray.

TJ - Am I reading your post correctly? That you and your team would like the WMFL Giants to play with your younger sisters? Wow. Spirit of the League has taken on an entirely new meaning, and this league is officially the best - NFL Jerseys, weekly BBQ, Trophies up for grabs . . . and now this. Is it too late to nominate Tito Jermaine Bradimore for SOTL?
Good readership, allow me to assure you that the WMFL Giants will continue to maintain the high moral standard we have set all season and will not fall to temptation. We aren't the Steelers!
So Ray Ray, you are correct - I will not stand for this. As much as it pains me to do it, over the next few days I will draw forth all of the (substantial) weaknesses in your roster for the entire readership to see. It will not be pretty, but it is on, my friend!

Well, if there were TV ratings involved with this weekend's semifinals, the networks would be very happy. We have arguably the four most prolific QBs in the WMFL over the last several years going at it. So lets get started:

The line on the Patriots/Redskins opened at 37. The house does not believe that the Skins should even be in this game, let alone hold any chance. However, the public money has been pouring in on the feel good story Redskins. That, coupled with the fact that as the week is progressing and the weather is still looking perfect for Noah, the line has dropped dramatically to 13.5. Does this mean that the Skins have a hope this side of Hell? No way, but it makes for interesting prop bets. The Skins are playing with a much understandable chip on their shoulder as they were written off on draft night. They only seemed to reinforce that by getting hammered by the Patriots in week 1. Since then though, this team has steadily improved, and getting into the semis should probably be considered a successful season. Not the case for the mighty Pats. This team has pedigree. They are only 2 years removed from winning the title with the same core. Colin and Mike have been playing together since preschool. Anything less than a championship this year will surely be a disappointment in the Hadden camp. The pressure in on the Pats, but they will deliver as long as they aren't looking past this game too much.

In the other semifinal, we have the clash of the titans. The line opened on this one as a "pick em" and bounced between +.5 and -.5 all week. The public has no idea on this one since they didn't play in the regular season. Both teams have shown flashes of dominance, but also have shown chinks in the armor at times. Raf typically likes to draft guys he's familiar with from other leagues, and that has helped him to get a re pore with Tim this year. Raf's core essentially win last year with Miller, so they know what it takes. Spack has not lost a step and has the Boys playing their best ball. The offense he has created has been a machine with his favourite receiver being the wide open one. This one is too close to call, but if BODOG has to make a call, we will go with Tim, Ben, and Darryl playing in the finals against the Haddens.

4-1 in the first week of the playoffs. Not bad, but I am sure all the haters out there will still question my ability to pick games.

Couldn’t get Schultzy to agree to making the picks again, but he did give me some advice on this weeks games. Not sure if I will take it or not.

Lots of chatter about the reffing assignments on the board this week and last. Can’t we all just get along? Does it really matter??? If you are that worried about who is assigned, you have far too much time on your hands.

Anyhow, onto the games…

Henry North - 8:00 – BRONCOS vs BROWNS

Broncos won 19-17 in week 7 of the season.

The Broncos are playing better now than they have all season, winning 3 of their last 4 games. The turn around has been led by their defense. Can they keep the Browns to 17 points again? Unlikely… The Browns can score lots and should be able to put some up on the Broncos while holding the Broncos offense in check.

Take the BROWNS

Henry South - 9:30 – GIANTS vs RAVENS

Ravens beat the Giants in week 5 22-9

Can the Ravens D hold the Giants to 9 points again? Not likely, as Nick and the Giants have come a long way since that week 5 game. Nick can move the ball around to many different receivers and will have to in order to beat this D. Can Ray-Ray lead the Ravens offense to score enough. It has been their Achilles heal all year and probably comes back to haunt them this week too. Schultzy told me to stay away from any team that has Snyder playing defense, as we watched the Packers beat him deep multiple times last week. Will the Ravens try and take advantage of that too or will Snyder hold like he usually does… I would bet on the latter, so I am not listening to Schultzy.

Take the GIANTS in a close one…

Henry North - 9:30 – 49ERS vs STEELERS

49ers dominated the Steelers 37-24 in week 3.

Can the 49ers overcome their disappointment in not getting into the Championship semi-finals and beat the lowly Steelers? Can the Steelers get enough bodies out now that they are not playing at 8AM? Noah was able to torch the 49ers deep a couple of times last week, which doesn’t bode well for the 49ers against this Steelers team who just love throwing long. However, I still think the ‘niners have the better lineup and will pull this one out.

Take the 49ERS

Henry South - 11:00 – COWBOYS vs PACKERS

Browns beat the Cowboys 31-0 in week 5 (DEFAULT VICTORY)

In the end, despite trying hard to never have to play one another, these two teams must meet and decide who is better on the field. Overall, on paper, the Packers lineup is the best in the league. Can they translate that to the field this weekend against a Cowboys team that many have underrated? Which weapon does the Cowboys D leave open? One play it will be Ben, the next Tank, the next Timmy, the next Daryl, and on and on. Mike uses all of them. Spack does the same with Marlon, then Brandon, then Jomo, not to mention Rick. I don’t see either defense winning many battles in this one, so it might come down to whoever has the ball last. Schultzy tells me that Spack is the best in this kind of game and overrides the talent advantage that the Packers have. I don’t agree.

Take the PACKERS in a close high-scoring, run and gun type game…

Henry North - 11:00 – PATRIOTS vs REDSKINS

Patriots won in week 1, 52-0

When these two teams met in week 1, the Patriots destroyed the Redskins, which then started all the talk about how poor a team Noah had picked. I guess he is getting the last laugh, isn’t he, making the Championship semi-finals. This team has grown up right before our eyes, but the question now is, can he slay the dragon? While I do believe that this game will be closer than the first time, I think the Patriots are the better team and will prove it again.

Take the PATRIOTS

This Saturday is supposed to be beautiful. Cool in the morning, but no rain. A perfect weekend for playoff football. Have fun everyone!!

To the readership:
My apologies for the lateness of my post, following the roasting I took last week I have been doing nothing but training all week. Think Fitty Cent 'in da club' video. Yeah, that's me.
First - I would like to acknowledge Tank, and thank him for allowing all of us to exist in his world.
Next - I had a tough time thinking of what to post about the Ravens team since they are really such an unremarkable squad.
Toast doesn't worry me. the name speaks for itself.
Clarkins are only good in three's, and i count only two on the roster.
Carter is even older than Miller, and will be coming in sulking that the 'new generation' doesn't appreciate volunteerism. Not a threat.
Walker and i have played together on some of the worst teams ever fielded in the WMFL and OTFL. Its like i am in his head. no worries there.
Ben, Rodney, and Young Raf all have potential - as they gain experience they will likely all be good ballers and possibly reach Giant level. Not a concern this week.
And that brings us to the architect of the disaster, Mr TJ Bradimore, aka Ray Ray.
TJ is a great baller, one of the best, and Nick won't throw the ball anywhere near him on D. Right Nick? That will negate his effectiveness in this game, since he is stuck throwing instead of catching the ball.
Can't wait to get the party started boys, see you all on the field tomorrow!

There is no doubt that the 'Skins have our hands full chasing around Mike, Steve, and Kevin for 90 minutes tomorrow. But as the video tape of that first week game finally stops playing tonight and my kids can finally watch the Family Channel, a sense of clarity has overtaken me. I know what needs to be done tomorrow.

You say impossible, 2000-1, over-matched, content with the semis, I say no, not quite done yet. Who would have thought the Blue Jays would be relevant again? Montreal has an Anglo mayor? No more Twinkies? I say these things are way more improbable then the Redskins hoisting the Championship Trophy next weekend. So WMFL doubters, get ready to be shocked.

And if that doesn't happen, the Cowboys/Packers game should be a great one on the South field.
