Let the trash talk begin…

I’m pretty much gonna say what I said last week about team Red — hell of a battle with Team White, and it’s one of those games that it’s a shame to lose. Really thought we were gonna pull it off late, but alas, it wasn’t to be. Fun game, and really one of those WMFL classics that embody what makes this league great.

Team Black came up a play short, but served notice that a team of old guys still have something left in the tank.

Good luck to Team White against Playoff Jelani and his band of merry men. Should be a good one.

And the moment of silence was awesome, as I expected. But what I wasn’t expecting was a double fly-over for our game. Not sure how we pulled that off with the league budget, but well done to our league exec. Very cool, guys.

My dearest friends Whitby friends it's the weekend we have all been waiting for:

The Jelani Adams Invitational!

The history books reveal a rich history for these squads.

Spack has won in 2004, 2005, 2007, and most recently in 2016.

2016 is also the year that Jelani started his remarkable run. He lost the final that year to Spack before posting the following results:
2017 - Win
2018 - Win.
2019 - 3rd.
2021 - Win.
2022 - Lost in finals.

He’s appeared in five of the last six finals, having won three times.

Overall this Saturday's game features two quarterbacks with true championship pedigree. Spack has two players nominated each for offensive MVP, defensive MVP, and even Rookie of the Year. Jelani on the other hand has one player nominated for Rookie of the Year, and a single nomination in both the offensive and defensive MVP categories.

They say this is his biggest challenge yet, but he may channel some of that same energy that allowed him to knock out a first-place, league-leading team of Spack, Jamie, Jack, and Mario back in 2019 when he finished third.

Last week Noah and team Black proved that team White can be beaten when they took them to overtime, and we all know that we can never count out Jelani.

Pick: Take Spack and team White. They simply have too many weapons for Royal Blue to handle, and this game will probably be put away in the second half. Look for another big day by Jacob Stoop, who is scandalously overlooked as defences focus on Jamie and Jack.

3rd Place game:

Noah and team Black take on Carolina Blue. Team Black is the safe choice here as their army of ageless wonders proves that no matter what, you wake up and play football for fun on Saturdays. Unless you're Noah and it's too cold.

5th place game:

Purple takes on Coal Grey who finally put together two halves and won a game. Bravo fellas. Kyle is likely to protect his lit dart better than the football. Like Josh Allen, he’ll heave the ball and say “F*(% it, there’s a defender open down there somewhere!” Take Coal Grey in this one.

And last but not least… The revered Toilet Bowl. There are some noteworthy game notes worth mentioning here.

Kitch & Tank, upon learning that they are scheduled to play yet again on the final Saturday of the season with a trophy on the line, are rumoured to be attending a darkness retreat together where they are immersing themselves in the sounds of dolphin love-making while taking Ayahuasca. They were seen leaving the field together last Saturday morning and have not been heard from since. Motivated by Aaron Rodgers’ miraculous recovery they are both going full send into alternative healing methods. Kitch always finds a way to beat Frank on the last day of the season, and unfortunately it seems this year that's in the injury department. Quite the feat if you ask me.

This game will come down to which ever team manages to field a full roster.

See you all at the banquet. Enjoy your week.

A big thanks to Frank and Kyle for all the help Saturday morning. Really appreciated that guys.

@TJ - I wish I could take credit for arranging that flyover with our league budget. Unfortunately, you just can’t arrange that type of thing unless you’re on the inside. So I did the next best thing and flipped open an emergency marine beacon and stuffed it in the goal post right before I left. I knew I’d done right as I was travelling east on the 401 towards the hospital and I saw Herc coming from Trenton in the opposite direction. You’re welcome.

See you Saturday.

Unfortunately I am going to miss the final week this year, but as everyone lines up for the Championship games, I wanted to throw out some thanks.

First - a general shout-out to every member of the WMFL. Thanks for another fantastic season. Every single person that registers and shows up to play each week is the reason this league is so awesome.

A special thanks to the Executive team for their work to put this all together, from registration to draft night to the weekly grind of the season. Your work does not go unnoticed, although it may seem so at times.

Thanks also to those that show up to ref and dont play in the league. We may yell at you from time to time, but we do appreciate that you are there sacrificing your time every week of the Fall.

Good luck to Team Spack and Team Jelani this weekend. Should be a great final game again, as it seems to be each year.

Spacks team is loaded for sure, but never underestimate the power of Playoff Jelani and his squad, which includes this years top Clarkin winner, Steven!!

Finally, go Team Kelly Green. Win that Toilet Bowl against Evil Joe!!

Remember that the most important thing is to have fun out there, no matter what! Like the team in the attached picture who won the title 4 years ago today.

Cheers to all and I am looking forward to next season already.

Big Pete
